The Budos Band self-titled debut album on Daptone Records is hard evidence of their eruption onto today’s Funk and Soul scene. The dramatic peals of brass and sax poured so liberally over sparsely orchestrated rhythm arrangements intone moods which are in one instant hopeful and sinister, urgent and nostalgic, buoyant and depthful beyond measure. The record opens with a lone prowling bass line that circles it’s listener four times before the fierce calculating rhythms of the drums and percussion join in. It's the next generation of funky afrobeat. El Michaels Affair are true orignators of 'cinematic soul'. On their debut record, "Sounding Out The City", the group has put together eleven instrumental gems. Through it's Jamaican production aesthetics, lush cinematic arrangements, and raw, soulful musicality, Sounding Out the City is a story expressed through music, a reflection of life in a bustling metropolis- good, bad, and indifferent.
