The
past year has been a roller coaster ride for one of Brooklyn's
hardest spitting MCs, Joell Ortiz. After being the first
Latino signed to Aftermath, Ortiz, ever on his grind, still
found time to generate a healthy buzz with a release on Koch,
his highly acclaimed debut album, Brick: The Bodega Chronicles. Unfortunately,
the much anticipated Aftermath release and collaboration with
Dr. Dre didn't follow soon enough and Ortiz requested and was
granted his release from Aftermath early this year. That
did not stop the fierce Puerto Rican MC from Brooklyn,
who has forged ahead and plans a mixtape release for April. Since
2000, Ortiz’s raw talent has landed him The Source Unsigned
Hype and XXL’s Chairman Choice, as well as placed him
on stage and in the studio with the likes of KRS-ONE, Kool
G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Akon and Immortal Technique. Although
he raps in English, Ortiz stays within his Nuyorican roots,
with his song “Latinos”, and with his more emphatic
statement in a song that also pays homage to his borough, “Mi
gente, you know I rep us hard in Brooklyn.” A proud S.O.B.’s
alum, Ortiz gave the venue a shout out on his album, "...Tore
S.O.B.'s down several Tuesdays," in reference to his regular
performances at Common Ground early in his career. Now
armed with a new and growing fan base, Ortiz returns as a headliner
on a Tuesday to light up the legendary stage once again.
